The persecutions under the Roman Emperor Domitian (81-96 A.D.) lead to John's exile on the island of Patmos. John wrote the book of Revelation to comfort the Christians back home on the mainland, advising them to remain strong in their faith even though they may be killed for refusing to worship the Emperor Domitian.
