Mt. Gerizim and Mt. Ebal are illustrated on the back of this coin, both with temples for worship. Between them is located a city whose names have been Shechem, Neapolis (on this coin), and presently Nablus. Shechem was the first stop of Abraham in Canaan, the site of Jacob's well, the first capital of the Northern Kingdom of Israel, then the capital of Samaria.

Joshua carried out Moses' commands to have a ceremony of blessings and curses on these mountains. Later the Samaritans erected temples on them for worship.

The woman at the well unsuccessfully tried to divert the attention of Jesus away from her sins and onto the question of worshiping on "this mountain". Later she brought the Samaritans to their Messiah, Jesus, and they believed in him.

Do you use diversions to keep Jesus out of your private life?
