At the time of Constantine the Great (307-337 A.D.), most Roman gods had faded into obscurity. Only Sol, the sun-god, remained popular. The back of this coin proclaims "To the Unconquerable Sun-god". Though this god was abandoned as well, the narrowing of attention to a single god helped pave the way for the monotheistic faith in the only real God.
But most people simply switched their token allegiance from fictitious gods, no more real than "Uncle Sam" for Americans, to token allegiance to God. They became nominal (in name only) Christians. Like the majority today, they never discovered that they could personally fellowship with the Living God of the Bible.
