In the Beginning..., after eating the forbidden fruit:

Genesis 3:7
Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves. NIV
As soon as they had eaten it, they were given understanding and realized that they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and covered themselves. TEV

When God came to meet the first two people, they hid because of their shame. The excuses began to flow as Adam, the first man, replies to God.

Genesis 3:10-11
He answered, "I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid." And he said, "Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?" NIV
He answered, "I heard you in the gerden; I was afraid and hid from you, because I was naked." "Who told you that you were naked?" God asked. "Did you eat the fruit that I told you not to eat?" TEV

Dr. Nelson speculates that in their sinless state, Adam and Eve were naked and bioluminescent, shining like fireflies and glowworms. That would be like Jesus at the Transfiguration (Matthew 17:2, Mark 9:3, Luke 9:29). There are also biblical references to the saints shining like the stars. An alternate name for Satan is Lucifer, meaning the bearer of light, so maybe he was also luminescent. Perhaps that was God's original intent for humans, the climax of his creation and made in his image, including shining light from within.

We might continue the speculation. Perhaps the fruit of the wrong tree contained a chemical so powerful that it caused permanent and dominant genetic damage, destroying the possible bioluminescent gene forever, and immediately turning off the light coming from Adam and Eve. That would certainly be noticeable right away, making them sense something was very wrong. Of course, sin itself is now like a genetic disease, passed on at conception to all generations, simply for being human. And nothing that we can do physically can heal that disaster.

(huo / fire)
Though the character looks like a man with small flames, the original oracle bone characters for fire are similar to the mountain characters, showing that the fire character did not come from the mankind character. The oracle bone characters for naked combine people characters with fire characters, sometimes as a crown.

(chi / red, bare, naked)

The kneeling man and the kneeling woman are crowned with light, fire.
(guang / light, bare, naked)
So the ancient Chinese characters hint that we may have looked very different before sin destroyed our relationships to God and to each other.

Genesis 3:21
The Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them. NIV
And the Lord God made clothes out of animal skins for Adam and his wife, and he clothed them.

(dao / knife)

(yi / clothes)
The oracle bone character looks like a covering over two people, one of whom comes from the side of the other, like the first two people.

(dao / knife) + (yi / clothes) = (chu / beginning)
The character shows clothes and a knife. Clothing started with the killing of an animal in the beginning.

(shou / hand) + (yi / clothes) = (cu / to die) [not verified; dictionaries give "sudden, abrupt"]

For (yi / clothes) + (guo / fruit) = (luo / naked, bare) the characters preserve the association between a particular fruit, clothes, and the former nakedness.
